Spanning approximately one and a half acres of what was once a bare paddock, this peaceful, established garden has been a labour of love for over 30 years. What began with spontaneous planting and a desire to fill a blank canvas, has blossomed into a diverse and productive space, despite the challenges of a largely clay soil the demanding terrain.
While her initial vision leaned towards a traditional cottage garden, Laura's understanding and appreciation for native plants, has grown over time. The result is a garden that skilfully integrates native flora alongside cherished exotics and ornamentals.
“We created the garden with, and alongside, our own little family. An uneven landscape full of life with plants that grew as our two children did. First steps were taken, curiosity grew, senses awakened, celebrations held, stories shared, lessons learned and foundations were laid down for family and garden.”
Laura's approach to gardening is one of constant evolution and joyful adaptation, influenced by her artistic eye and a desire to connect deeply with nature. It's a place where the rhythm of the seasons is celebrated, where every growth and colour shift is noticed, and where the simple pleasure of watching tūī at the birdbath brings immense delight, to Laura and her granddaughters alike.
This garden is more than just plants; it's a living canvas, a peaceful retreat, and a space for fostering connection with family and friends steeped in a rich patina of memories.
Host Laura brings a passion a for nature and a lifetime of learning to our Secret Gardens community. A teacher by profession, Laura's passion for knowledge-sharing naturally extends into her garden and her interactions with visitors.
The joy of gardening was sparked by her Mum and was an interest they enjoyed together. Growing up surrounded by the delights of a backyard full of fruit trees and flowers, Laura fostered an early appreciation for nature's simple pleasures.
Her artistic spirit shines through her keen interest in needlework, quilting, and other crafts. Laura particularly loves picking and arranging flowers from her garden, often transforming them into thoughtful gifts that spread joy to others. Her approach to life, much like her gardening, is about embracing evolution, adapting with flexibility, and finding immense joy in small moments and connections.
Throughout my life, gardens have a provided a sense of belonging - a safe, nurturing place, and a constant source of delight and discovery.
