When Victoria arrived a decade ago, this section was a compacted clay site buried under river stones and invasive yukkas. Today, thanks to the application of over 100 cubic meters of mulch and a dedicated no-dig philosophy, the soil now provides a rich foundation for an incredible diversity of life.
The garden is thoughtfully divided into five distinct zones, each offering a different sensory experience. Visitors are greeted by the Berm Garden at the entrance. Planted in wild flowers and cottage garden favourites such as holyhocks, salvias, pentstemons, eryngium, dara and irises, this high-visibility berm has become a local talking point, frequently slowing down passersby and initiating many lengthy gardening conversations.
Through the gates is the Whimsical Garden, a joyful, colour-filled space that sets the tone for the property. Beyond lies the Mandala Garden, featuring 12 raised macrocarpa beds overflowing with vegetables, dwarf fruit trees, and an impressive collection of dahlias and English cottage-style annuals and perennials
The Hedged Paradise Garden—created in memory of Victoria’s mother—is designed for contemplation and meditation, offering a circular sitting area where one is surrounded by a kaleidoscope of flowers. The journey continues into a Tropical Garden featuring an array of edible plants and flowers, including a thriving banana circle, guavas, and Thai aubergine trees. With over 40 fruit trees and a focus on rare and unusual perennials, this garden is an experimental, playful landscape where nature is encouraged to take the lead.
Paradise Botanica is a compelling visit for any gardener interested in permaculture systems, soil health, and the art of creating a restorative retreat within the city.
Victoria describes her garden as her palate, a natural extension of her background in Fine Arts.
An artist, musician, midwife and former university educator, Victoria has always been a nurturer and a teacher, qualities that now find their primary expression through her plants.
Her gardening journey reached a profound turning point in 2022 following a life-threatening medical event. During her recovery, the act of sowing seeds and connecting with the land became central to her healing process, and her focus changed from trying to manage nature to one of a harmonious partnership.
Victoria is a self-confessed plantaholic with a particular passion for rare perennials and an "uncontrollable compulsion" to propagate. She loves sharing her extensive knowledge on sustainable systems, propagation, and the foundational sense of peace that gardening fosters.
My garden is a rewarding partnership–where I provide the foundation, and the plants provide the magic.
