Flower Arranging at Lakeside Haven: The Art of Colour
Bringing cut flowers into the house is one of the great pleasures of a productive garden, but making them sit well together in a vase requires a few foundational techniques. In this hands-on, two-hour workshop, Secret Gardens host Jo will break down the practical principles behind building balanced, long-lasting arrangements using seasonal blooms.
The focus for this session is working with colour—understanding contrast, harmony, and how different palettes interact in a room. Jo will begin with a live demonstration covering stem selection, proportions, and simple structural tricks florists use to create form without complex mechanics. She will also cover post-harvest care: conditioning your stems and choosing the right spots in your home to maximize vase life.
Following the demonstration, you will select your own material from the garden and build an arrangement, with Jo on hand to offer guidance and feedback. This session is designed specifically for beginners, focusing on accessible, repeatable skills you can use with whatever is flowering in your own backyard.
Each participant takes home their finished arrangement and a practical reference sheet detailing care techniques and conditioning tips.
What you'll need
A clean vase or jug, approximately 20cm tall.
